Oil prices declined on Friday as shipments through major maritime routes showed signs of recovery, easing some concerns about supply disruptions. However, tensions between the United States and Iran have yet to produce any meaningful diplomatic progress.

Brent crude fell $1.03, or 1.2%, to $88 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate declined $1.50, or 1.8%, to $82.09 per barrel.

Supply Risks Temporarily Ease

Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea has continued, reducing fears of a severe disruption to global energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz remains particularly important because it normally carries around one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Nevertheless, elevated security risks continue to push freight costs and insurance premiums higher, keeping a substantial geopolitical risk premium embedded in oil prices.

Oil Remains on Track for a Strong Monthly Gain

Despite the session’s pullback, both Brent and WTI remain on course for gains of approximately 20% for the month.

This suggests that the broader market trend continues to be supported by regional conflict, higher transportation costs and the risk of disruption along strategic energy routes.

Saudi Arabia Pushes for Greater Maritime Security Cooperation

Saudi Arabia is seeking to establish a multinational maritime coalition to strengthen security in the Bab El-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

These are all critical routes for global energy transportation, particularly while risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved.

Conclusion

Oil prices are undergoing a short-term correction as supply flows improve, but the broader outlook remains supported by geopolitical risks.

Markets will continue to monitor tanker traffic through Hormuz, developments in the Red Sea and any new changes in U.S.-Iran relations.
