Gold Eases After Hitting a More Than Two-Month High as Markets Await U.S. Inflation Data

Gold prices edged lower on Tuesday after reaching their highest level in more than two months, as investors turned their attention to upcoming U.S. inflation data for further clues on the interest-rate outlook.
Spot gold fell 0.3% to $4,374.82 per ounce by 05:48 GMT, after hitting $4,434.84 per ounce earlier in the session, its highest level since June 5. U.S. gold futures rose 0.4% to $4,435.00.
Renewed Inflows Continue to Support Gold
Gold’s move above $4,400 per ounce in early trading was driven largely by renewed investment flows into the metal and improving market sentiment.
If these inflows continue, the $4,400 per ounce area could become an important level in determining whether gold can consolidate and extend its recovery toward higher prices.
CPI and PPI Move Into Focus
The U.S. Consumer Price Index report is due on Wednesday, followed by Producer Price Index data on Thursday.
These releases are expected to play an important role in shaping expectations for Federal Reserve policy, especially after weak July employment data prompted markets to scale back expectations for a rate hike next month.
At its July meeting, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged, although three officials voted in favor of a rate increase.
If incoming data continue to show a cooling economy without a significant resurgence in inflation, expectations for tighter monetary policy could decline further. That could put pressure on the U.S. dollar and provide additional support for gold.
Geopolitical Risks Remain in Focus
Tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz remain another important factor for the gold market.
New demands between the United States and Iran could complicate efforts to reach a peace agreement and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, helping maintain some safe-haven demand for gold.
Other Precious Metals Decline
During the session:
Spot silver fell 1.7% to $64.64 per ounce
Platinum declined 0.4% to $1,745.68 per ounce
Palladium dropped 0.8% to $1,372.44 per ounce
Conclusion
Gold is undergoing a modest pullback after reaching its highest level in more than two months, but its underlying support remains intact.
In the short term, U.S. CPI and PPI data will be key factors influencing interest-rate expectations, the U.S. dollar, and gold’s ability to hold around the $4,400 per ounce area and extend its recovery.
