German Defence Giant STARK to Manufacture Drones in UK, Boosting Swindon’s Industrial Revival

German defence technology firm STARK has announced plans to establish its first manufacturing plant outside Germany in Swindon, Wiltshire, marking a significant expansion of its European operations and signalling a new chapter in UK-German defence collaboration.
The new 3,700-square-metre (40,000-square-foot) facility will produce unmanned aerial weapon systems, including the company’s advanced loitering munition platform, Virtus. The Swindon site is expected to generate over 100 high-skilled jobs and further cement the town’s reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
Founded in 2024, STARK has quickly emerged as a leading provider of autonomous systems for NATO forces. Its Virtus drone system—equipped with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, a strike radius of up to 100 kilometres (62 miles), and a 5kg payload—represents a new generation of battlefield technology.
Strategic Expansion into the UK
Mike Armstrong, Managing Director of STARK UK, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion. “Both the UK and Germany are world-leaders in technological innovation. By leveraging Britain’s defence expertise and Swindon’s manufacturing legacy, we aim to define the battlefields of the future.”
Armstrong also stressed the importance of resilient, cross-border supply chains to support NATO readiness and ensure rapid production capacity across Europe. “We need scalable, sovereign defence capabilities to protect our people, defend our sovereignty, and deter aggression,” he added.
A Nod to Swindon's Military Legacy
The move brings Swindon full circle to its historical roots in defence manufacturing. During World War II, the town played a pivotal role in producing the legendary Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft. Now, it is poised to become a key player in Europe’s next-generation defence capabilities.
Local MP for Swindon North, Will Stone, hailed the investment as “bringing back defence manufacturing to a town with a proud military legacy.” He added, “This is just the start—creating high-skilled, well-paid jobs and putting Swindon back at the heart of Britain’s industrial future.”
Swindon Borough Council leader Jim Robbins echoed the sentiment, calling the move a “strong endorsement of our town’s growing reputation in advanced manufacturing and innovation.” He emphasized that the project was “a major step forward in positioning Swindon as a national leader in defence technology.”
UK-Germany Defence Partnership Strengthens
This announcement comes on the heels of the Trinity House Agreement signed between the UK and Germany in 2024, which aims to deepen bilateral defence and security cooperation. The establishment of STARK’s UK operations is seen as a direct outcome of this strategic partnership and a concrete example of closer transnational integration in the European defence sector.
As tensions rise globally and the demand for rapid, autonomous defence solutions grows, STARK’s investment signals a broader trend of reshoring critical defence manufacturing capabilities. It also reflects increasing geopolitical alignment between London and Berlin in safeguarding European sovereignty through advanced technology.
Economic and Strategic Implications
Economically, the plant is expected to inject millions into the local economy and catalyze growth in related sectors such as aerospace engineering, AI, and advanced materials. Financial analysts note that defence manufacturing hubs like Swindon could also attract future investment from suppliers, research institutions, and international partners, strengthening the UK's defence supply chain resilience.
Strategically, the move positions the UK as a more integral player in European defence manufacturing, reducing reliance on U.S. imports while reinforcing NATO’s autonomous capabilities. It also complements the UK government's broader industrial policy of promoting high-tech innovation and levelling up regional economies.
As Europe recalibrates its security priorities in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape, STARK’s expansion marks not only a local win for Swindon but also a significant milestone in the evolution of European defence infrastructure.
